NFC and RFID for the DPP: When Do They Make Sense?

When to use NFC, HF RFID or RAIN (UHF) RFID tags for a Digital Product Passport — comparing cost, read range and real use cases against QR codes.

EN 18220 permits QR, Data Matrix, NFC, HF RFID and RAIN (UHF) RFID as data carriers. QR is the de facto default — but in three scenarios NFC or RFID is clearly better.

When NFC wins

  1. Premium and luxury goods: tap interaction is part of the brand experience and the tag can be invisible.
  2. Authentication: cryptographic chip features give stronger evidence than a copyable QR. See fighting counterfeits with a DPP.
  3. Resale: a permanent, hard-to-remove identity on the product. See DPP in resale and second-hand.

When RAIN RFID wins

  1. Inventory and logistics: reading everything in a carton without opening it.
  2. End-of-life sorting: fast material identification on a recycling line.
  3. Industrial assets: dirty, oily or hard-to-reach surfaces.

The dual-carrier strategy

The most common pattern in practice is QR + NFC or QR + RAIN RFID:

  • The QR guarantees free access for consumers and inspectors (the legal requirement).
  • The second carrier delivers commercial or operational value.

Both carriers must encode the same identifier; different identities look like two separate passports and create data inconsistency.

Cost and process impact

RFID and NFC tags bring process cost more than print cost: tag application, chip encoding, verification and scrap management. On high-volume low-price goods, that rarely pays back.

Can I write passport data onto the NFC tag?

A small core data set can be written, but the full passport stays online. Think of NFC as an identifier carrier.

Is RAIN RFID enough for consumers?

No. Consumers have no dedicated reader, and the legal requirement is a smartphone-readable carrier.

Do the tags last as long as the product?

RFID and NFC tags are usually more durable than printed codes, but mechanical damage and metal surface effects must be tested.
