EUDR: The Deforestation Regulation and Traceability
Which commodities the EU Deforestation Regulation covers, why geolocation data is required and how it combines with DPP traceability infrastructure.
The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) requires certain commodities and products derived from them to enter the EU market deforestation-free. Scope: cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, soy and timber, plus derived products.
Scope and derived products
Derived products are in scope as well as the commodity itself:

The geolocation requirement
This is what sets EUDR apart: not just a country, but the coordinates of the production plot. It forces supply chain mapping and is, in most companies, the deepest point of the data collection effort.

The due diligence statement
The operator placing the product on the market must complete information gathering, risk assessment and risk mitigation, then submit a due diligence statement. Without it, the product cannot be placed on the market — a precondition similar in logic to registry entry for a DPP.

- Link commodity-level origin data to the product record.
- Manage evidence files (maps, coordinates, certificates) in one archive.

Frequently asked questions
Are there easements for small businesses?
The regulation provides some simplifications and later application dates for micro and small enterprises, but the data demand in the supply chain continues.
Is certified timber (FSC/PEFC) enough?
Certification is a strong input to risk assessment but does not by itself remove the geolocation and due diligence statement obligations.
I export furniture into the EU. What should I do?
Request plot-level origin data from timber suppliers and structure the same data for DPP origin fields.
