DPP Cost Breakdown

What a Digital Product Passport programme really costs — software, data collection, LCA, labelling and verification, with realistic budget ranges.

By IDPP · · Updated: · 2 min read

What a DPP costs depends on your scope. But the distribution of the budget is similar in almost every project: software small, data collection large.

Cost distribution

LineTypical shareNote
Data collection labour35–55%Internal effort plus supplier chasing
Platform / software15–30%Subscription or per passport
LCA / carbon10–25%Depends on product group

Scenarios by scale

Small brand (under 100 SKUs, one product group)

  • Platform: €600–3,600/year
  • Data collection: 20–60 person-days internal
  • LCA (optional): €1,500–8,000
  • Year one total: €2,500–10,000

Mid-size (100–1,000 SKUs, many suppliers)

  • Platform plus integration: €10,000–40,000/year
  • Data collection: one part-time person
  • LCA/PCF programme: €10,000–30,000

Enterprise (multiple product groups, dataspace integration)

  • €100,000+ and a multi-year programme

Hidden lines

  1. Data cleaning: if the BOM is not at material level, that has to be built first. See preparing a bill of materials.
  2. Supplier chasing rounds: first-round response rates are low.
  3. Version maintenance: certificate renewals, formulation changes.
  4. Multilingual content: with lots of free text, cost multiplies by SKU count. See multilingual passports.
  5. Persistence: backup and archive. See data persistence and backup.

Legitimate ways to spend less

  • Start scope with your 20 highest-volume SKUs.
  • Focus on Phase 1 fields and defer carbon.
  • Reuse existing certificates and test reports.
  • Merge data collection with CBAM and CSRD work. See CBAM and the DPP.
  • Explore support programmes. See export incentives for SMEs.

Frequently asked questions

Why is year two cheaper?

The one-off work — data cleaning, the first supplier round, integration, template setup — is finished. What remains is maintenance.

Per passport or subscription?

Per passport suits seasonal collections; subscriptions are more predictable with a stable catalogue.

Is non-compliance cheaper?

No. A shipment held at the border, market withdrawal and lost orders exceed these budgets many times over. See the cost of non-compliance.
