Brand Differentiation With a Digital Product Passport
How a DPP becomes a marketing asset — evidence-based communication, storytelling and avoiding greenwashing risk as transparency becomes standard.
Within a few years every in-scope product will carry a passport, and having one will stop being a differentiator. What will differentiate is content and evidence.
What will you show?
A passport carries mandatory fields. The voluntary ones create the difference:
| Mandatory | Voluntary and differentiating |
|---|---|
| Material shares | Supply chain story (with identity masked) |
| Care instructions | Repair videos and spare part links |
| Recycling information | Take-back or resale programme |
| Carbon value | Methodology and improvement roadmap |
See what consumers should see.
The asymmetry of transparency
Transparency is not a neutral tool: a manufacturer with genuinely good performance wants to show more, and one without falls behind. That is why the passport creates competitive pressure across a sector.
The practical consequence: if you have a strong recycled content share or a short supply chain, tell that story with evidence. See proving recycled content.
Greenwashing risk
A passport makes your claims visible — and also auditable. An unevidenced claim can now be disproved in one click. The rules:
- Use numbers, not adjectives.
- Declare the methodology.
- Clarify the scope (the whole product or one component?).
- Do not boast about a legal requirement.
See the Green Claims Directive.
The retailer side
Retailers and marketplaces are starting to display passport data on product pages. Being able to supply your data in structured form is an advantage at listing. See DPP for e-commerce and marketplaces and what retailers ask suppliers for.
Frequently asked questions
Does a voluntary passport make sense if I am out of scope?
Yes — increasingly so, to answer retailer requests and to stand apart from competitors.
Is telling a supply chain story risky?
Telling it through attributes with identities masked is safe: "woven at a GRS-certified facility in Portugal". See protecting trade secrets.
My carbon value is higher than a competitor's. What do I do?
Show the methodology and your improvement plan. Comparisons often stem from method differences. See how to calculate a PCF.
